MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. -- Service members and their families represent the military’s core values by giving back to their communities. The Marine Corps Base Quantico Volunteer Program helps members connect with volunteer opportunities on the installation and surrounding areas. Volunteering connects people and greatly impacts the lives of those within the community.
“The program is important because it leads to the overarching morale of our volunteers, a sense of community in a place they may not call home. It connects them to the local community and the installation,” said Joyce Murphy, volunteer coordinator with Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS), MCB Quantico. “It [Volunteering] engages our Marines showing a positive image.”
According to MCCS Quantico, 622 active volunteers from the base and surrounding community donated approximately 4,400 hours of volunteer time to over 30 organizations throughout the year in 2020. MCCS recognized these individuals for their hard work and dedication during National Volunteer Week, April 18 - 24, 2021.
“This year we are recognizing [individuals] by the Virtual Volunteer Campaign, highlighting different volunteers,” said Murphy. “I know we have a youth volunteer, a spouse volunteer and six Marines that earned the varying levels of the Presidential Volunteer Service Award.”
The eligibility requirements for the Presidential Volunteer Service Award depends on the number of volunteer hours an individual has completed. Individuals are awarded the bronze award for 100-174 volunteer hours, the silver for 175-249 hours, and the gold for over 250 hours of volunteer service.
“Becoming a volunteer on Quantico is easy, you can reach out to the volunteer program by visiting the MCCS website as well as emailing me,” said Murphy. “It [the volunteer program] enables individuals to volunteer their time and talents with the Marine Corps community.”
