EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. - Thirty Airmen with the 116th Security Forces Squadron, Georgia Air National Guard, along with units from the Alabama Air National Guard, completed annual training here, May 17 to 21.

The five-day course began with heavy weapons training where the Airmen trained with various machine guns and grenade launchers.

“We teach everyone how to use the firearms they need for deployment or for duty,” said Tech. Sgt. Alan Glaze, noncommissioned officer in charge of combat arms with the 116th SFS. “It’s important because it teaches our guys how to ultimately protect themselves and our assets.”

The weapons training was followed by hand-to-hand combative training and “shoot, move, communicate” drills.

“Combatives teach our Airmen how to engage in hand-to-hand combat, especially today where mixed martial arts are so popular,” Glaze said. “The ‘shoot, move, communicate’ drills train us how to maneuver under fire when engaging threats. These drills allow us to work with other units and share the same tactics. This training is essential to keep our skills honed and mission ready at all times.”

Tech. Sgt. Hai Splestoser, a combat arms instructor with the 116th SFS, explained how this training is important for new Airmen, to help them build esprit de corps with their fellow wingmen.

Airman 1st Class Olivia Wilkie, a new member who completed her technical training in January, completed her first annual training this week.

“It’s really good,” Wilkie said, “I got to fire the M249 for the first time. This training gives us a real-world experience, so if we’re deployed, we have experience with what we’ll be using.”

Chief Master Sgt. William Greenway, manager of the 116th SFS, observed his Airmen’s performance throughout the week.

“As a whole, they’ve been doing an outstanding job,” Greenway said. “We’re all very impressed with what we’ve seen — the camaraderie and the teamwork that has gone into accomplishing the training — which helps us accomplish our mission.”
