By: Lt. j.g. Elijah Ray, Fleet Weather Center-Norfolk PAO

NORFOLK, Va. — Captain Chris L. Gabriel relinquished command to Captain Erin E. O. Acosta in Fleet Weather Center-Norfolk’s (FWC-N) change of command ceremony held April 29, 2021.

Despite obstacles presented by COVID-19, FWC-N successfully hosted a ceremony celebrating the occasion. The event was live-streamed via Zoom and Microsoft Teams in an effort to maximize virtual attendance.

Capt. Gabriel expressed his pride and gratitude for the accomplishments of the sailors of FWC-N.

“With sailors like this, I have great hope for the future of Fleet Weather Center Norfolk and for the Navy…It has been my greatest honor and privilege to serve alongside you as your Commanding Officer. Thank you for the trust you placed in me, and allowing me to be a part of this great command.”

Capt. Acosta detailed her vision for FWC-N moving forward, as well as the responsibility that comes with being its Commanding Officer.

“Our responsibilities extend from the United States to Europe, Africa and Southwest Asia. We meet national, DoD and Navy requirements. The responsibility is great, in every sense of the word, and we will continue to meet our mission with vigor…All I ask from you is your personal best every day. And I will give you mine.”

During the ceremony, Presiding Officer Rear Adm. John Okon, Commander, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command, addressed the excellent support FWC-N provides to the fleet every day, still challenging it to be even better moving forward.

“Fleet Weather Center Norfolk, what you do is simply eye-watering in every aspect. While you continue to deliver day-to-day, I will need you to be even better in the future as our Navy undergoes significant change.”

The ceremony concluded with the traditional assumption of command ceremony, in which Capt. Acosta read her orders and officially relieved Capt. Gabriel of command.

FWC-N provides timely, comprehensive, and tactically relevant meteorological and oceanographic (METOC) products and services in direct support of fleet training & readiness in the realms of aviation, maritime, tropical, and resource protection.
