One of the main reasons some people in today’s society believe they wouldn’t be able to become a United States Marine is because of the physical standards and not being able to make it through the rigors of recruit training. Instead of focusing on the now, many individuals close a door to what could be an amazing opportunity because they try to predict the future.
A Marine Corps recruiter may have the profession of finding America’s next generation of Marines, but they also assist in preparing those future Marines with the capabilities to handle the physical and mental challenges of recruit training.
The Marine Corps’ Delayed Entry Program (DEP) is a program developed to shape future Marines to be above the standard before they even start training. The DEP provides future Marines an inside look into the Marine Corps culture and is designed to help those young men and women foster friendships with other individuals who are aspiring to become Marines.
“The Delayed Entry Program helps not only develop future Marines physically and mentally, but more importantly, morally,” explains Staff Sgt. Steve Tamez, the pool program specialist with Recruiting Station Orange County. “It's the first exposure to the Marine Corps environment and is meant to reduce the shock of recruit training.”
The program helps determine who has the grit and fortitude to better themselves and meet the requirements for initial training. Recruiters are able to see who is determined to face the challenges, and those who refuse to adapt and grow through the process.
There is a reason the Marine Corps is the smallest branch in the Armed Forces, and why there are only a few willing to fight and win our nation's battles. This organization is a place where the strongest come together and challenge each other every day to be better than the last. The Delayed Entry Program is meant to set future Marines up for success; focus on the now because when your time comes, the Marines will ensure you’re ready to train on your path to earning the title as a United States Marine.
