    Federal Vaccine Response

“The COVID-19 vaccination mission here in St. Paul, Minnesota is my first deployment," said Airman 1st Class Daniel Howerton, assigned to the 20th Equipment Maintenance Squadron at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina.

Howerton helps provide logistical support to the St. Paul Community Vaccination Center (CVC).

“I provide support to the medical personnel administering the COVID-19 vaccine at the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) drive-thru tent,” Howerton said. “Basically I just make sure that the vaccinators are always supplied and have their vaccines ready to go. I help prepare vaccine cards. Making sure that there is a constant stock of vaccines helps increase productivity and streamline appointments.”

Howerton, originally from Huntsville, Alabama, joined the Air Force in January 2019.

“I joined the Air Force because I wanted to travel and finish up school,” he said. “I went to the University of Alabama for two years before joining.”

While at the University of Alabama, Howerton chose to major in mechanical engineering.

“I chose this because I’ve always liked and understood how things work,” he said. “My dad and both of my older sisters are engineers as well.”

Back in 20th EMS at Shaw AFB, Howerton works as a munitions systems specialist or more commonly known as Ammo.

Some of his main duties include the build-up, storage, inspection and tracking of all missiles, conventional bombs, rockets, chaff, flare, ammunition and any other explosives or explosive components for a base.

“I like being a part of Ammo because there is a good amount of camaraderie between people,” he said.

Growing up Howerton played tennis, the piano and baseball.

“I started playing the piano when I was eight years old and took lessons for eight years,” he said. “I still play the piano and I’ve played tennis all of my life.”

Helping people get back to a new normal and making them feel safer is one of the most rewarding parts of this mission for Howerton.

“I just want to help make people feel safe and I want them to know that we are there for them,” he said.

Howerton promotes to E-4 or Senior Airman at the end of May.
