On April 21, Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola celebrated the reopening of the Navy Exchange (NEX) auto port gas station after being closed for five months for replacement of an outdated fuel system to a more environmentally friendly fuel dispensing system.

Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Southeast environmental petroleum compliance section, assigned to the installation’s Public Works Department (PWD), led the upgrade and replacement of the fuel dispensing system that serves base personnel on a daily basis.

“The upgrades performed at the NEX auto port gas station provided NAS Pensacola with an environmentally compliant fuel dispensing system using the latest technology in petroleum system components,” said Mary Breindel, environmental engineer for NAVFAC Southeast.

The $1.4 million project replaced two 10,000-gallon Underground Storage Tanks (USTs) with two 12,000-gallon Aboveground Storage Tanks (ASTs), one consisting of a dual-compartment to store premium gasoline and diesel fuel, and the replacement of the connecting above and below ground piping for each tank. Seven new fuel dispenser units for customers were also installed at the station.

Last year, one of the 30-year-old USTs was emptied and placed out of service due to an alarm received from an interstitial sensor. Tanks are designed to be double walled and the space between, called interstitial, contains any liquid before it becomes an environmental hazard.

The conversion from USTs to ASTs provides lower environmental risk to NAS Pensacola since the USTs reached the end of their design life and any release would be visibly evident for an AST versus UST.

The NEX auto port gas station is strategic to NAS Pensacola’s mission and operations, as a fuel source during natural disasters, such as hurricanes, and serves as a valuable asset to active duty and retirees for vehicle fueling.
