From Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Lt. j.g. Niki Kirchner-Hope is the assistant combat systems officer and oversees all weapons, electronics, and information systems on USCGC Hamilton (WMSL 753).
She joined the U.S. Coast Guard because she wanted to challenge herself and experience different and unique things. She graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 2018 and has been on Hamilton for one year.
She participated in the most recent deployment in the U.S. Sixth Fleet area of operations reinforcing U.S. commitment to freedom of navigation in international waters while building capacity and partnerships with nations that have shared interests and threats in the maritime domain.
“This deployment matters because it allowed us to build relationships with our Allies in the region and demonstrate we are a Coast Guard with global impact,” Kirchner-Hope said.”
She said the biggest challenge for this three-month deployment across the Atlantic was away from friends and family for so long. But her favorite part was the dogs she met in Georgia.
Her advice to anyone going underway is to go in with the mindset that it won’t be easy – you’ll be challenged in some way every single day. Know when to prioritize your own well-being and recognize what has to be done right this second versus what can wait.
