From St. Mary’s County, Maryland, Lt. j.g. Erin Morgan graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 2018. She has now been on USCGC Hamilton (WMSL 753) for one year as the assistant engineering officer. Morgan was on the most recent deployment to the Mediterranean and Black Seas.
“The biggest challenge during this deployment was the time changes,” Morgan said. “When we pull into port, the first thing I wanted to do was call my family but, they wouldn’t like being woken up if I called at 2 a.m. their time, even if it was from across the world.”
She said her favorite part of the deployment was escorting the two fast response cutters across the Atlantic to their new home in Bahrain.
“We prepared so much for the escort, particularly the astern fueling at-sea, the last few months, and it was worth it to see that preparation pay off,” she said. “Same with all the afloat engagements, especially Malta. We trained their maritime squadron and air wing members on flight deck operations, which will help them prepare their new ship for operations.
Her advice to anyone thinking about getting underway is to take the opportunity absolutely.
“Stay positive once you’re underway,” Morgan said. “It can get hard right around day 40 of a 97-day deployment, but it’s so worth it. How many people can say they’ve sailed in the Black Sea? I’ve been to 13 countries with the U.S. Coast Guard, and I’ve only been in three years. And even when I’m not on patrol, I still like to be on the water. Whether it’s kayaking, sailing, or renting a motorboat. I also volunteer to teach boating safety to middle and high school-aged kids.”
