As part of on-going efforts to develop the U.S. Space Force, Cape Cod Air Force Station was officially renamed to Cape Cod Space Force Station during a ceremony on June 11, 2021.

The ceremony was presided over by Lt. Gen. Nina Armagno, Director of Staff, U.S. Space Force.

The newly renamed installation has, and will continue to serve as home to the 6th Space Warning Squadron. The Airmen and Guardians of the 6th SWS provide accurate and timely missile warning, missile defense, and space surveillance data to U.S. and allied decision makers for the safety and security of North America.

The members in "Team 6," include Department of the Air Force and Royal Canadian Air Force Airmen and Guardians, DoD civilians, and InDyne employees.

During a similar ceremony at Vandenberg Space Force Base, California, Lt. Gen. Stephen Whiting, Space Operations Command commander, spoke of the establishment of the U.S. Space Force as a significant step forward in the recognition of space as a warfighting domain.

“Renaming Air Force installations where space operations is the primary mission more closely reflects the overall mission of the base,” said Whiting. “Renaming these installations is critical to building a distinct culture and identity for the Space Force.”

Cape Cod Air Force Station was first activated on Oct. 1, 1979 and is the only land-based East Coast radar site in the United States supporting these missions.

The 6th SWS is a subordinate unit under Space Delta 4, located at Buckley Space Force Base in Aurora, Colorado.
