The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) is non-profit organization that offers financial education and assistance to active duty, reserve, and retired personnel as well as their eligible family members at locations across the globe. Services include budgeting counseling, Quick Assist loans, Budget for Baby workshops, free in-home registered nurse visits, and their newest addition on Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola: the Uniform Locker.
The uniform locker located onboard NAS Pensacola at NMCRS sells used uniform items at a lower cost. From covers, footwear, and insignia, the Uniform Locker offers a wide range of sizes and types for both Navy and Marine Corps service members. Items are available for cash-only purchase by active duty personnel and their dependents.
Donations are the source of every item in the uniform locker. The uniform locker allows uniformed service members to reuse uniforms that would otherwise remain packed away. All current Navy and Marine Corps uniform items are eligible for donation and can be delivered to the NMCRS.
As well as uniform donations, NMCRS accepts monetary donations through their website or cash and checks in-person at the Pensacola office. Throughout March and April, NMCRS received more than $231,000 in donations from the Active Duty Fund Drive (ADFD). The ADFD is “an avenue for Sailors and Marines to contribute to NMCRS and help support their fellow shipmates and Marines in need of financial assistance and education.”
“Donations allow us to provide the best possible service for patrons,” said Joy Barnes, director at NMCRS Pensacola.
NMCRS at NAS Pensacola also works diligently to provide confidential financial assistance to its patrons. The staff is compassionate, knowledgeable, and has created a comfortable and secure environment for all personnel. Hurricane financial preparedness, monthly budgeting, emergency financial planning, and education budgeting are a few examples of assistance NMCRS can provide.
In addition to their financial programs, NMCRS provides Budget for Baby workshops for active, reserve, and retired personnel as well as surviving spouses and eligible family members. The workshops provide expecting parents with family budgeting, money saving tips, and local resources. Participants receive a handcrafted blanket, a NMCRS tote, and a $50 gift card. The workshops take place in-person at the NMCRS office onboard NAS Pensacola.
Free, in-home visits by a Registered Nurse for active duty and retired service members along with their families, widows, and widowers are also available through the NMCRS. The Visiting Nurse Program is a source for health education, resource referral, prenatal and postnatal needs, and any medical concerns for all ages. Personal, in-home visits provide a specialized and relaxed environment where the nurse can assist in the specific way the person needs.
The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society Pensacola is currently offering in-person assistance in accordance with COVID-19 regulations. The office is open from 8 a.m. through 4 p.m. on weekdays for all services.
