FORT STEWART, Ga. – A Soldier and a noncommissioned officer both assigned to 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, are slated to compete at the 2021 XVIII Airborne Corps Soldier and NCO of the Year Competition scheduled for June 21-25 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Spc. Gavin Currey, a 20-year-old from Lakeland, Florida, and cavalry scout assigned to Troop C, 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, and Sgt. Hunter Davidson, a 24-year-old from Covington, Georgia, and infantryman assigned to Company B, 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, were announced as 3rd ID’s SOY and NCOY May 10, 21.
Currey, who spends most of his free time collecting vinyl records and working out, says that he has spent most of the past month preparing for the competition by training harder during physical training in the morning and doing additional training after work.
“I’m not only preparing myself for the Army Physical Fitness Test, but I’m also preparing to complete any task quickly and effectively,” said Currey.
Davidson, who loves recreational activities like golfing, fishing, hunting and woodworking has spent the last several weeks taking care of his body by stretching and eating right.
“This is not something everyone gets to do, being the one selected to represent the Spartan Brigade and Marne Division comes with a great sense of pride,” said Davidson.
“Spc. Currey and Sgt. Davidson have put their all into this competition, setting the standard for both Soldiers and NCOs alike,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Jamie Lopez, the senior noncommissioned officer of 2nd ABCT, 3rd ID. “I know they will make our brigade and the Division proud as they represent us at the 2021 XVIII Airborne Corps SOY/NCOY Competition.”
