CARSON CITY – Soldiers and Airmen of the Nevada National Guard completed the first iteration of Purple Resolve; a human development training focused on developing the warrior culture. Two sessions of the pilot program were held within the week. The two-day sessions allowed founder Michael Nila and his team to customize the program to military culture further. “This is a foundation training that is designed to be a catalyst to jumpstart the lifelong learner,” Nila said. “It is simply about human effectiveness, and to be an effective human, you have to be a good learner.”

The Blue Courage educational process is designed not as a class but rather a process of continuing education and a philosophy of leadership and human development that is foundational to a culture of excellence and execution. The program offers a wide variety of topics that engage participants and push their boundaries of growth and learning, magnifying their capacity to then influence those around them. These topics include leadership, mission and purpose, diversity and inclusion, resilience, respect, health and wellness, and positive psychology.

Among the presenters was David Lau, a counterterrorism and security professional. He delivers leadership and counterterrorism training to U.S. federal agencies and the military, as well as foreign law enforcement partners, as a Senior Instructor within the Leadership and International Training Division at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. Lau retired from the U.S. Army in 2014 with 21 years of service in the active, reserve, and National Guard components.

“For some, it is important to relearn how to learn. Some adults in this targeted audience have been out of a learning environment for years,” Nila said as he defined the materials provided to the participants. Each attendee would receive a participant guidebook, The Nobility of Policing – a booklet of powerful imagery, quotes, facts, figures, and short anecdotes, a Learning Journal for guided reflection practices, and finally, a mirror that is propped up on each participant’s desk. “We challenge the participants to open their mirrors on their desks to remember that they are the change-makers, the ones who hold power to influence,” Nila said.

A “Train the Trainer” event will be held in late July. This event would allow Nila and his team to train Soldiers and Airmen to become the torchbearers who will bring these teachings and practices to a broader audience in the Nevada National Guard.
