U.S. Marine Corps Chief Warrant Officer 4 David Tomlinson, the Marine Corps Systems Command infantry weapons officer, gave a brief at the Ivy Hall on Camp Geiger, North Carolina, June 17, 2021. The brief discussed the importance, as well as changes to capabilities and equipment for the ground combat element systems within the Marine Corps.

“There are a lot of new optics, weapon systems and gear we are going to be fielding,” Tomlinson said. “Much of this gear is still being discussed in testing but some of it is already in the field.”

Among this new gear is an updated plate carrier that is lighter in weight to give Marines more mobility. High cut helmets designed to integrate over the ear hearing protection with communication capabilities. Updated night vision equipment that offers better clarity and depth perception. As well as more future initiatives with the joint services.

Tomlinson also discussed mortar systems with updated technology for a quicker and more efficient way for Marines to employ them as well as new squad capabilities for ground combat effectiveness. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of updating and improving equipment in order to modernize ground combat element systems.

“Staying up to date on equipment is paramount,” Tomlinson said. “We have to keep modernizing our equipment to stay ahead of our near peer adversaries.”

According to Sgt. Maj. Michael Cato Sr., the Marine Corps Systems Command sergeant major, all this new equipment is important in order to give an advantage to the Marines in the ground combat element.

“We need to continue to keep our warfighters at an advantage,” Cato said. “The best way of doing that is to continue to increase our technology and improve our gear to ensure that our Marines keep and maintain their advantage.” He also stated that in order to meet current threats, the Marine Corps must continue to evolve.

“The Marine Corps needs to transform from a legacy force to a modernized force with new capabilities able to meet current and evolving threats,” Cato said. “Marine Corps Systems Command is the key enabler that takes concepts and ideas and provides material solutions to the force. SYSCOM is the critical link to ensure we equip the future force for the future fight.”
