FORT CARSON, Colo. -- Amid clouds of dust and the Colorado sunshine, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) engineers are preparing for the new Army Combat Fitness Test by working with engineers of the 4th Engineer Battalion, 4th Infantry Division to build a new area for testing on the Group compound here.
10th Group submitted the application for the project in August 2020.The main challenge for this project was justifying concrete installation on the compound, and why it is important for Group to have its own testing area for the ACFT, explained an engineering officer who is a leading part of the construction.
Fort Carson approved the build in November 2020. The next step for this project was acquiring materials to build the testing area itself such as concrete, lumber, rebar and iron tracks to lay the foundation of the astro turf lanes. This part of the project took from December 2020 to February 2021.
The teams began by leveling off the area and softening the ground to make later construction processes easier. Concrete will be added by the Army engineers as well, making the project completely military built.
While the ACFT consists of seven events, the Sprint Drag Carry requires a specific type of area for testing and is the most construction intensive.
Soldiers sprint 25 meters down and back to the starting line. Without stopping, soldiers then drag a 90 lb sled the same distance, after this they must carry two forty pound kettlebells with each hand. Soldiers then do a shuttle sprint down the lane before finishing with a full sprint. The entire event must be completed within three minutes.
“On the construction side of things I could not have asked for a smoother project. This is a great opportunity for training and to have many different engineer groups at Fort Carson work together,” said the Capt. “With the weather starting out cold and wet I have nothing but respect for the people that are out here every day working on this project, I’m sure we’re all excited to see the end result.”
The ACFT is a fitness test that consists of seven different parts: Three Repetition Maximum Deadlift (MDL), Standing Power Throw (SPT), Hand-Release Push-Up (HRP), Sprint-Drag-Carry (SDC), Leg Tuck (LTK), Two-Mile Run (2MR) and Cool Down.
“The most rewarding part of my job is that I got experience and knowledge on construction, so that I could leave the army and have a great job in the civilian world,” said U.S. Army Spc. Brandon Freed, carpentry masonry specialist, assigned to the 4th Engineer Battalion at Fort Carson. “It's an experience not a lot of people get to have, it makes me happy I have landmarks on this base to look at and realize I helped build with my two hands.”
The testing area is projected to be completed during the summer of 2021.
