The 436th Logistics Readiness Squadron held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for their new 550Truckplus driving simulator at Dover Air Force Base, Delaware, June 22, 2021.
The simulator utilizes three 55-inch monitors and speakers to fully immerse drivers in various weather conditions, road conditions, equipment malfunctions and vehicles including semitractor-trailers, buses and Humvees, to produce a safe, well-rounded training environment.
“This driving simulator is the most cutting-edge and most diverse when it comes to [simulating] weather, road conditions, visibility and equipment malfunctions during operations,” said Tech. Sgt. Lori Thompson, 436th LRS ground transportation noncommissioned officer in charge. “Prior to this simulator, young, inexperienced drivers would have to get behind the wheel of vehicles that can weigh more than 60,000 pounds. Now our operators are able to get comfortable with these vehicles before physically getting in them; this takes a lot of pressure off the Airmen and their trainers.”
The simulator not only ensures the safety of the drivers, passengers and cargo, but also reduces wear and tear on the 436th LRS vehicle fleet.
“[Training with the simulator] takes away the unnecessary risk of damaging real vehicles or getting in an accident due to [inexperienced] drivers,” said Staff Sgt. Jonathan Graczyk, 436th LRS training validation and operations NCO in charge.
After Airmen are familiarized with the simulated vehicle, transitioning into the real vehicle will be seamless, said Gracyzk.
The simulator will be used in upgrade training for new Airmen, and as a refresher for experienced Airmen. There are currently four Airmen training on the system, with more expected to utilize it in the future.
