FORT KNOX, Ky. – Col. CJ King relinquished command of the Fort Knox garrison to Col. Lance O’Bryan during a change of command ceremony at Waybur Theater here June 30.

Director of Installation Management Command-Training Vincent Grewatz officiated the event, and discussed the importance of having great leaders in such a vital role.

“The Army develops leaders that are committed, innovative, motivated and capable of handling challenges of command in a complex environment, and the last two years certainly qualified as that.” said Grewatz. “[Col. King] is one of these outstanding Army leaders.”

Grewatz said O’Bryan also embodies those leadership qualities, and brings a track record of excellence to his new position.

“I’m confident that this [new] team will lead the organization with the pride and distinction, and successfully rise to every challenge that emerges here at Fort Knox.”

During his final address to the Garrison and community members, King took the time to thank the many individuals he had the opportunity to work with throughout his time at Fort Knox. He specifically pointed out the extreme challenges and great efforts of all those involved during the pandemic, offering his deep gratitude for his team.

“Thanks to each of you for what you’ve done to make this the best place to live on, work at, deploy from and come home to,” said King. “I don’t think I’ve ever served with a more committed force than this group of directors and the Soldiers, the civilians and the contractors that they lead.”

Grewatz praised King, saying his leadership helped influence the Garrison’s success throughout the pandemic.

“Running an installation is not for the faint of heart,” said Grewatz. “It’s a full contact sport that demands hands-on leadership, and its success is critically dependent on teamwork. Nowhere is this more evident than here at Fort Knox.”

Following his assignment here, King will serve as the director of the Future Forces Integrations Directorate at Fort Lee, Virginia.

O’Bryan, who comes to Fort Knox from U.S. Africa Command in Stuttgart, Germany, thanked King and his fellow installation leaders for their support. He also wanted his new team to know how encouraged he was by what he’s already witnessed since arriving.

“I am humbled and honored to be given the chance to join the Fort Knox Garrison team,” said O’Bryan. “In the few short days that I have been here, I’ve been amazed at the passion that this team consistently displays. They take pride in their work, and they provide the most important and impactful services to our Soldiers, Families and civilians.

“They are the foundation of readiness, and I am proud to say I am your teammate.”

O’Bryan is a native of Monroe City, Missouri and has served in the Army since he was commissioned in 1998.
