NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee National Guard heads to Texas for training after months of domestic operations in support of the COVID-19 pandemic, civil unrest, and disaster response.

Soldiers from all four of the major commands in the Tennessee Army National Guard, the 278th Armored Cavalry regiment, the 230th Sustainment Brigade, the 194th Engineer Brigade, and the 30th Troop Command, will spend roughly three weeks in July training in the austere Texas hill country.

The exercise, eXportable Combat Training Capability, or xCTC, provides a unique training opportunity allowing Soldiers to exercise field craft and battle drills against an opposing force under combat conditions.

“Our Guardsman have provided world class support to multiple operations affecting our great state,” Brig. Gen. Jimmie Cole, Tennessee’s Land Component Commander relates. “Over the last 15 months, our Soldiers have responded to natural disasters, the COVID-19 pandemic, and civil unrest events at home and at our nation’s capital. Most recently, our Soldiers are making a tremendous difference by assisting local health agencies in the delivery of the COVID-19 vaccine.

“I’m tremendously proud of their demonstrated flexibility and adaptability and I know they are poised and ready to resume training for their federal mission of large scale combat operations.”

“I feel very confident about transitioning from the COVID-19 mission to my original duty as a scout,” said Pfc. William Orton, a cavalry scout with 4th Squadron, 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment, based in Newport. “I’m putting on a different hat for this training. Before, I was fighting against a virus and helping in the community. Now I’ll be using the skills I’ve gained and applying them at xCTC.”

The 278th is one of five Armored Brigade Combat Teams in the National Guard consisting of over 4000 Soldiers from all across the state with a ground Squadron from Texas and an Unmanned Aerial Surveillance (UAS) platoon from Maryland. As the primary training audience, the 230th Sustainment Brigade, the 194th Engineer Brigade, and the 30th Troop Command headquartered respectively in Chattanooga, Jackson, and Tullahoma will support the 278th.
