Grafenwoehr Bavaria-- U.S. Soldiers from across Grafenwöehr Training Area competed for the German Armed Forces Badge of Marksmanship, or “Schützenschnur”, July 7, at Range 114, Grafenwoehr, Germany.
The Schützenschnur was an opportunity for U.S. Soldiers to engage with their German counterparts, the Bundeswehr, who hosted the event, and learn how to operate German weapons systems.
“It feels amazing getting to work side-by-side with these partners in the German Army,” said Sgt. 1st Class Drake Bistrow, the Noncommissioned Officer In Charge of the 615th Military Police Company. Bistrow, who had served in Germany previously, said he had met some of the German Soldiers years before and was excited to work with them again.
“That just shows how strong the bond is,” Bistrow said.
The U.S. Soldiers received weapons familiarity on the Heckler and Koch G36 rifle and a double-action H&K P8 model pistol by the German Soldiers prior to firing for the badge. In order to qualify, Soldiers need to hit at least 11 of 16 targets on the rifle and 3 of 5 on the pistol.
“It’s a foreign badge and it's a privilege to obtain it,” said German Master Sgt. Andre Potzler, the range NCOIC. “It is bringing Soldiers together from both nations. They interact, train, and familiarize with Germany’s weapons systems. We live up to the motto, ‘Train as you Fight,’ and we are in this together.”
