Fort Hood, Texas – On their first day of post graduate training – annual residency day – seven physicians started a new journey and 11 reflected on the past two years of training in the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center family medicine residency program during June 30.
The medical residency program is a postgraduate training program that prepares the physicians for many challenges in the medical field according to Lt. Col. Megan Raleigh, physician, Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center and family medicine residency program director.
“We do full scope medical care of family medicine,” said Raleigh. “We deliver babies, take care of pediatric patients who are within the clinic and the hospital, we take care of adult patients, Soldiers, family members, retirees, geriatric, and end of life care here on the wards too.”
CRDAMC also recruits interns who learn about family medicine and Army family medicine and have the opportunity to join the residency program Raliegh noted.
First year resident’s captains Hayley Spires and Thomas Kotnik had different inspirations to choose the medical profession.
“I had a lot of instances where I watched family members interact with health care, some were awesome and some I was disappointed by, so I was like well then you gotta go into health care (to make a change),” said Spires.
Kotnik noted that his inspiration wasn’t necessarily related to a person.
“Over time I figure out that I enjoy the science behind medicine, that I enjoy doing patient care and the doctor and patient relationship,” said Kotnik. “CRDAMC is a great place to do residency.”
