On March 20, 2020, eight volunteers from the Marine Corps gathered near Camp Lester in Chatan Town to clean up the fence line alongside the Camp started from the Camp Lester Gate 1.

According to Hiroko Tomimura, community relations specialist for Camps Foster and Lester, the cleanup is part of the routine for Earth Week promotion every year.

They met up with three Japanese volunteers from the neighboring community. Ryoko Higa, president of Jagaru Community Center Children's Association in the neighboring community, was informed by Tomimura and she participated with her daughter who just graduated from Junior High school.

“My daughter is interested in learning English. The best way to learn English is for her to actually interact with native speakers of English while doing some work for the community,” said Higa. “However, we were shocked at seeing so much trash on the ground. I drive here all the time but never knew there was this much.”

Higa hopes her daughter feels something from this experience and it affects her daughter‘s mindset from now on. “Joining in an
event like this will give more opportunities for anyone to encounter new things in many ways,” Higa said.

Upon reaching the Jagaru bus top, all the volunteers were stuck. The ditch behind the bus stop by the fence was layered with trash from big trash like cracked pots and sandals to small but valuable like credit cards or prepaid cards. Even spending more than half an hour picking up trash there, they still saw more trash embedded.

While everyone was at it, Camp Foster and Lester Commander Col. Vincent J. Ciuccoli and Sgt. Maj. Lynnette C. Marr-Gaye of Headquarters and Support Battalion joined the team. Marr-Gaye got down in the ditch herself and started picking up trash by hand. “It is easy to pick up trash this way,” Marr-Gaye smiled.

Ciuccoli also saw the trash hidden under weeds in the ditch and stepped down. When he found another sandal like what he picked up earlier in another spot, he cracked up laughing.

Ciuccoli told Marine volunteers to spread the word to their friends, come together with the community to do more positive things.

“I saw the event on the email and talked to my co-workers,” Cpl. Karoline Herrera from Base Supply Office said. “We knew it was a cleanup. Anything we can do to help out the local communities, we will do. I was just surprised that so much trash was embedded in side of the road.”

There were more than 10 bags of trash and a one big bag of cans picked during one hour and half event.

　３月20日、北谷町のキャンプ・レスターに海兵隊の８人のボランティアがレスターゲートから基地フェンス沿い清掃のために集まった。

　キャンプ・フォスター＆レスター基地渉外官の富村浩子さんによると、清掃は毎年アースウィーク推進の一環として行っているそうだ。

　途中、３人の日本人ボランティアと合流。近隣地域の北谷謝苅子供会会長の比嘉亮子さんは富村渉外官から連絡を受け、中学校を卒業したばかりの娘と一緒に参加した。

　「娘は英語を学ぶことに興味があります。英語を学ぶ最善の方法は、彼女が実際に自分の地域のために貢献をしながら、英語のネイティブスピーカーと対話することです」と、比嘉さんは言う。「しかし、私たちはこれほどたくさんのゴミがあることにショックを受けました。いつも車で通っていましたが、こんなにたくさんあるとは知りませんでした」と比嘉さんは驚きを隠し切れない。

　比嘉さんは娘がこの経験から何かを感じ、これからの彼女の考え方に影響を与えることを願った。「このようなイベントに参加すると、誰もがたくさんの方法で新しいことに出会えるより多くの機会を持つことが出来ます。」

　謝苅バス停に着くと、ボランティア全員はそこに留まった。バス停の後ろのフェンスとバス停の間の溝はごみの層でできていた。ひび割れた鉢やサンダルのようなゴミからクレジットカードやプリペイドカードのような小さいながらも貴重なものまであった。30分以上を費やしてごみを拾ったが、まださらに多くのゴミが埋まっていた。

　全員がバス停でごみを集中して拾っていると、キャンプ・フォスター＆レスター基地司令官のビンセント・Ｊ・チコーリー大佐と本部業務大隊のリネット・Ｃ・マーゲイ最上級曹長も清掃チームに参加。マーゲイ最上級曹長は自ら側溝に入り、手でゴミを拾い始めた。「手でごみを拾う方が（ゴミばさみを使うより）簡単です」とマーゲイ最上級曹長は微笑んだ。

　チコーリー大佐もまた側溝の雑草の下に隠された大量のゴミを見て溝に降りた。彼は別の場所で先に拾ったサンダルのもう片方を見つけると笑い出した。

　チコーリー大佐は海兵隊のボランティアに、友人たちに、よりポジティブなことをするために地域社会にいっしょに出てくるように伝えるよう奨励した。

　「私はＥメールでこの取り組みを見て、同僚に話しました」と、在沖海兵隊兵站補給部補給課のキャロライン・エレーラ伍長は言った。「私たちは地域社会に貢献できることなら何でもします。でも、道路脇にたくさんのゴミが埋まっているのには本当に驚きました。」

　１時間半の清掃中にボランティアは10袋以上のゴミと１つの大きな袋いっぱいの缶を収集した。
