ANSBACH, Germany (July 9, 2021) -- The German-American Partnership Shoot, an annual tradition between U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach and the town of Herrieden is a friendly marksmanship competition that brings Soldiers, Civilians and Germans to the Oberdachstetten Training Area.
The competition strengthens community relations between USAG Ansbach and local host nation partners, specifically the garrison’s partner city of Herrieden.
This year marked the event’s 37th iteration, with the competition moving from Herrieden to the Oberdachstetten Training Area 26 years ago. Last year’s shooting event in 2020 was cancelled due to the restrictions of Covid-19.
“I came out here to get in touch with the German forces, shooting with their weapons and seeing how they operate,” said Sgt. Mario Ibarra, a U.S. Soldier assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment, 12th Combat Aviation Brigade, in Katterbach, Germany. “Sharing a good time with NATO forces is always something that brings good camaraderie.”
Participants in the event included German shooting clubs, Active and Reserve teams from the Bundeswehr (German Army) and the Ansbach Polizei. American participants were U.S. Soldiers from USAG Ansbach.
Armed with M-4 carbine rifles, and nine rounds of ammunition, competitors had nothing else besides their will and ability to engage paper targets on the range and strive for supreme accuracy.
”The importance of this event is the friendship between Germany and our American friends,” said Dorina Jechnerer, Mayor of Herrieden. “I think it’s a good tradition to have this competition and I wish everyone the best.”
Participants and observers of the event were also treated to local homemade German cuisine while awaiting the results of the competition and conversing in friendly natures with the local allies.
The winning teams and shooters received trophies, and a hand-painted wooden plaque, representing the friendship of the city of Herrieden and the Armed Forces.
