This marks the eighth year of the Fort Hunter Liggett summer hire program, offering labor and clerical positions to high school and college students within the Garrison. This gives them an opportunity to learn valuable skills while receiving a salary in the summer months.

They benefit from hands-on training within several directorates. For many, such as Kylee Caron, 16, this is their first work experience.
Caron works in the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Marketing Office. She assists in distribution of marketing materials throughout the installation in addition to helping set up events at the Hacienda and Cybrary. “I have learned that everyone depends on everyone at a job,” she said. One of her favorite skills learned while working is digital graphic design using Adobe Photoshop. Caron will have an associate degree in business by the time she finishes high school this year at Paso Robles High School and loves that she can apply these marketing skills in her future.

Anthony Rangel, 21, has worked with the installation since 2018. He has worked every summer for Liggett Lanes, taking the opportunity to save money and build his resume for college. “I really have learned that having a job requires patience, because you never know what problem you may run into. I feel that I have achieved making pizza and patience here.” said Rangel.

Charlemagne Tertulien, DFMWR Director remembers participating in similar programs as a youth, working over the summer to gain work experience and make some pocket money. “I want them to experience what I got to experience, and learn what I learned when I was their age,” he said.

Tertulien added, “I am very happy with the program, because it gives me the opportunity to mentor young people and watch them learning toward their goal.”
