PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii - Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) San Diego Training Site Hawaii graduated six officers and seven enlisted from 12 separate operational units who attended its Key Management Infrastructure (KMI) Operating Account Manager (KOAM) course, July 30.

“The KOAM course is the most in-demand course our training site offers in Hawaii, and we never have an empty seat,” stated IWTC San Diego Training Site Hawaii’s director. “The instruction provided supports Department of the Navy critical training needs for all of our Hawaii-based ships, submarines, U.S Marines, and U.S Coast Guardsmen. In addition to our five mandatory COIs [courses of instruction], we routinely receive multiple requests from the fleet for special convenings; in this FY we completed four KOAM special convenes.”

Students of the KOAM course were equally impressed about their learning experience and eager to make a positive impact on the fleet.

“A program as robust and critical as KMI requires dedicated and focused training. This course not only instilled the skills necessary to be a successful KOAM, but I am ready and looking forward to taking on the KOAM role back at my command,” remarked one student in the course.

KOAM is a functional “F” school course, which teaches students how to successfully administrate and implement the Department of the Navy’s KMI and communications security (COMSEC) programs to ensure secure and reliable communications across the Fleet.

Emphasizing the course’s impact, another student said, “The importance of effectively operating with secure communications cannot be overstated. The KOAM course has helped me learn the different roles and actions I will be responsible for, as well as introduce me to the equipment operations needed to ensure proper communications security in the fleet.”

A Senior KOAM Master Training Specialist stated, “Our course’s biggest advantage is the experienced instructors, who have familiarity with communications security in the classroom. With this being an operator-only course, having that proficiency helps with students’ uncertainties regarding policies associated with being a manager.”

IWTC San Diego Training Site Hawaii offers 12 courses of instruction in information technology and is one of four training sites overseen by IWTC San Diego.

IWTC San Diego, as part of the Center for Information Warfare Training (CIWT), provides a continuum of training to Navy and joint service personnel that prepares them to conduct information warfare across the full spectrum of military operations.

With four schoolhouse commands, a detachment, and training sites throughout the United States and Japan, CIWT trains approximately 26,000 students every year, delivering trained information warfare professionals to the Navy and joint services. CIWT also offers more than 200 courses for cryptologic technicians, intelligence specialists, information systems technicians, electronics technicians, and officers in the information warfare community.
