GROTON, Conn. (NNS) Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Avery Cipriano was pinned to her new rank during a frocking ceremony at the Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory (NSMRL) on July 30.
The ceremony, presided over by Capt. Jennifer Buechel, NSMRL’s executive officer, provided the opportunity to recognize the outstanding performance and accomplishments of Cipriano.
After arriving at NSMRL in October 2020, Cipriano assumed her primary role as a member of the Operations Department’s logistics team, where she coordinates and manages the shipping and receiving of essential equipment. Cipriano also supports the lab’s research efforts, volunteering as Command Duty Officer on overnight research studies that require 24-hour monitoring, assisting with diving research protocols in the command’s indoor test pool, and supporting the Submarine Medicine Department’s submariner microbiome project
A native of Franklin, Massachusetts, Cipriano enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Sept. 2017. She is currently enrolled in Community College of Rhode Island’s nursing program. When she graduates with her nursing degree, she intends to apply for a commission in the Navy’s Nurse Corps.
“HM3 Cipriano has been a valued member of the NSMRL team since she arrived,” said Lt. Nicole Johnson, Operations Department head, and a former hospital corpsman. “Earning your crows [rank insignia] and becoming a non-commissioned officer is a huge honor. With advancement quotas becoming even more limited in the largest rating in the Navy, this selection means not only a pay raise, but an increase in responsibility and the challenge to raise your own bar and continue to improve. Cipriano is up for the task and eager to set the standard.”
In the spring of 2021, Cipriano volunteered to assist with the Naval Medical Research Center’s (NMRC) COVID-19 Health Action Response for Marines (CHARM) 2.0 study at Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center and Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in California. CHARM 2.0 was a continuation of an initial COVID-19 study initiated by NMRC, and monitored for possible post-COVID-19 infection health-related issues in Marines and Marine recruits. Cipriano spent several weeks in California supporting the study’s data collection efforts.
Cipriano also works at Navy Medical Readiness and Training Unit Groton, providing care to current and future submariners and serves as a certified command sexual assault victim advocate.
NSMRL is a command under the Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, and is located at the Naval Submarine Base New London. NSMRL delivers research solutions to promote the health, welfare, and performance of submariners and divers, with the mission to sustain the readiness and superiority of our undersea warriors through innovative health and performance research.
