Tucson, Arizona – Exceeding standards is a lifestyle for Spc. Brittany Lane Dixon, flight operations specialist from Greensboro, North Carolina, with the North Carolina National Guard’s (NCNG) Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 151st Aviation Regiment.
Despite circumstances, military deployments, relocation, and a pandemic, Dixon has remained determined and will begin her doctoral program in physical therapy in January 2022.
Dixon said she hopes she can inspire the younger generation of Service Members through her actions and want them to know that hard work is valuable.
“Everybody has the potential to initiate their own success,” Dixon said. “I think it is also important to inspire young people to be selfless, kind, and to set boundaries to protect themselves.”
Dixon’s education journey began in Montana but was quickly put on pause when she deployed to Afghanistan after her first semester of college.
After her deployment, she relocated to Greensboro, N.C. and attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and began working towards her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology.
Dixon poured herself into her work and was determined to get the grades she wanted while working full time and fulfilling her commitment to the North Carolina National Guard.
“I’ve had to miss weeks of school in support of hurricane relief efforts through the North Carolina Army National Guard,” Dixon said. “I would bring my studies to the armory and any opportunity I had, where I was not on the radio or actively working, I would be studying in order to not fall behind.”
Hurricanes were not the only thing that would divide her time between school, work, family, and the NCNG, like many Guardsmen, Dixon was activated to support COVID-19 relief efforts in the spring of 2020.
Despite her final semester of college overlapping with a global pandemic and being activated to support her state, Dixon spent every night in her hotel room studying so she could fulfill both her commitment to herself to finish school and her commitment to the NCNG.
“By the grace of God, I somehow aced every exam,” said Dixon who graduated from the University of North Carolina - Greensboro in May 2020.
Whether it's joining a bouldering gym for the challenge, or pushing through school while serving in the National Guard during a global pandemic, Dixon is proud of the hard work she’s put in to accomplish her goals.
“Anything in life worth having is worth working for,” Dixon said. “If you truly wish to achieve something in your life, never expect it to be handed to you.”
