A Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Keyport Labor and Employee Relations specialist received the 2021 Philip Heiler Award.

Megan Hudson received the award for her efforts during the pandemic, including launching the COVID-19 Helping Employees Access Resources Team, or HEART, which helps employees manage the stresses of teleworking, home schooling, and other family-related challenges.

“I'm very humbled to have received this award," Hudson, who entered federal civil service at Keyport, said. "Working on the COVID-19 front has been a rewarding experience and I have felt lucky to support the workforce during these unprecedented times. I'm privileged to get to work with such wonderful people."

To honor individuals in Naval Sea Systems Command’s Warfare Centers Human Resources community for their outstanding accomplishments, the NAVSEA Warfare Centers Workforce Council established the Philip Heiler Award for Human Resources Excellence in 2014.

Named after Mr. Philip Heiler, former Human Resources director at Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division, the award adheres to the following criteria:

    • An extraordinarily successful recent accomplishment or demonstrated career achievement in establishing or improving high value support products or processes.
    • Typically, the award will recognize exceptional levels of achievement in the face of difficult undertakings.
    • Demonstrated personal originality, initiative, innovation, commitment and perseverance in achieving beneficial impact to important agency interests.
    • Positive impact on a major program or process such that there is a significant improvement in service, economy or effectiveness.

“She directly assisted NUWC Division Keyport in building and shaping a competitive and well-managed workforce,” said Gigi Bryant, NUWC Division Keyport Human Resources director. “She's a consummate professional in all interactions and provides unparalleled support as a member of the Labor and Employee Relations team in the Human Resources Office.”

In addition to her role in HEART, Hudson assisted in developing and facilitating the Building Readiness for Action in Crisis and Emergencies sessions. As a Seattle Federal Executive Board Associates Program member, she took part in assembling the experts for nine 90-minute presentations in specific emergency preparedness fields to ensure the BRACE sessions were conducted.

Most notably, Hudson reached out to other local Navy commands to set up COVID-19 vaccine appointments through Naval Hospital Bremerton’s site on Navy Base Kitsap Bangor, Bryant said. Her actions resulted in more than 800 Keyport employees receiving the vaccine. Hudson made every appointment and coordinated with the Division business managers and supervisors to ensure employees reported at the appropriate times to receive their initial and follow-up shots.

Hudson earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Maryland University College and graduated magna cum laude.

She's been married for 17 years and has a daughter.
