    SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES

    09.07.2021

Story by Petty Officer 3rd Class Luke Cunningham

    USNS MERCY (T-AH 19)

SAN DIEGO – Military Sealift Command (MSC) hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) began its quarterly Mercy Exercise (MERCEX) Sept. 7.
The pierside exercise will consist of approximately 300 Sailors who will participate in training exercises and drills throughout MERCEX.
During MERCEX, Sailors conduct directorate specific and cross-directorate training, medical readiness training and patient transport training. Sailors also participate in exercises such as firefighting and damage control drills, abandon ship drills and man-overboard drills.
To conclude MERCEX, Sailors will participate in an all-hands, capstone event to test their abilities learned throughout the week.
When called upon, the Mercy is expected to deploy within five days to provide scalable, role three medical and surgical care across a broad range of specialties. Mercy can serve in an afloat theater hospitalization capability, supporting the joint warfighter engaged in the full range of military operations.
Mercy is one of two hospital ships owned and operated by MSC. Mercy conducts operations in the Pacific area of responsibility under the guidance of U.S. Pacific Command and Commander, Pacific Fleet.
