The 51st Civil Engineer Squadron Explosive Ordnance Disposal flight hosted a combined joint EOD exchange known as multicrab on May 19, 2021.

This training opportunity brought together EOD units from United States Navy, Marines, Army, Air Force and the Republic of Korea. This two-day training allowed each unit to learn about capabilities across different branches and nations.

“The intent of this exchange is to have EOD units in the PACOM region as well as the ROK EOD unit do joint training together and share in capabilities” Said Captain Hank Yoder, 718th Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company commander. “It’s important that we’re constantly in contact and sharing our capabilities and updating on new TTP’s as new threats continue to emerge.”

On day one, the EOD teams practiced controlled explosives inside of buildings. Each team was tasked with setting off a controlled explosive in the time allowed. One day two, they practiced making their way through buildings and clearing out explosives.

“We’ve been trying to make some joint training with foreign and local units and we’re really excited,” said Yoder. “This is the first event of its kind, that we’ve done in a while, especially after COVID-19.”

COVID-19 has presented new challenges, but the EOD teams found ways to continue training. Enabling them to remain vigilant and prepared at all times.

“Since we do year-long tours and most of us have come here during COVID, this has not been something that we’ve been able to do” said MSgt Michael Perkins 51st Explosive Ordnance Disposal flight chief.
