FORT BENNING, GA – Congratulations to Major Nichole Hash, WHINSEC alumni who attended the Command General Staff Officer Course (CGSOC) academic year (AY) 2018-2019. The Army's coveted Goodpaster Scholars, AY 2022 Advanced Strategic Planning and Policy Program (ASP3) selected Major Hash. The ASP3 is a multi-year program that prepares Army officers for service as strategic planners through a combination of practical experience, professional military education, and a doctorate from a civilian university. Scholars spend up to two years in graduate school satisfying all course and exam requirements leading to acceptance as a doctoral candidate. During these two years, officers will attend professional military education at the School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS), studying history, strategic theory, and the practice of strategic planning. Once complete with their Education, Scholars then serve a developmental assignment in a strategic planning position (Finney, n.d.).
Each year the Army only selects 10-12 people in the entire service to attend. As part of the application packet, candidates must submit at least one example of scholarly work. These may be published or unpublished and may have been completed as part of a previous degree requirement. Ideally, the topic of the writing sample should relate to the applicant's potential dissertation topic. A GRE minimum required scores for applicants are 153 Verbal Reasoning, 144 Quantitative Reasoning, and 4.5 Analytical Writing.
Hash stated, "I first learned about the ASP3 program through LTC(R) Florentino Santana's School of Advanced Military Science (SAMS) prep courses at WHINSEC. While working toward my Master of Military Arts and Science, Dr. Santiago Rodriguez, Dr. Edwin Roldan, Dr. (LTC) Achim Biller, and thesis chair, Dr. (LTC(R)) Fernando Montoya provided a phenomenal opportunity to me to research and write a thesis, contributing back to the Army and an understanding of our world today. Their mentorship, guidance, and strict scholar standards set the conditions for preparing for a doctoral program. It made me a good candidate for the ASP3 Goodpaster Scholars Program."
Absolutely nothing can replace the experience of being a student at WHINSEC, more importantly, part of an international family. There isn't a more supportive team than that of our Western Hemisphere partners! I am a non-heritage Spanish speaker, and although attending WHINSEC was a goal I set as a cadet, I knew it would be a challenge for me. When I found out our thesis defense rehearsal took place in Spanish, I was nervous. However, feedback from my classmates gave me the confidence to know that I could present in an academic Spanish dialect. I am grateful to each of my classmates who took the time to help me learn, embrace so many different cultures, and form lifelong friendships across the hemisphere. SIEMPRE LISTOS!
Rodríguez, who was the Delta team leader when Hash attended CGSOC, had this to say about her, "As one of my students during the Command and General Staff Officers Course, MAJ Hash completed a Master of Military Art and Science. Her thesis, "Evaluating Russian Soft Power in Nicaragua: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Russian State-Sponsored Information and its Effectiveness," is considered one of the best research papers published at WHINSEC. MAJ Hash proved to be a take-charge officer who can successfully develop plans and work well with others."
Hash added, "I am hoping to continue studying the interplay of Russia and Latin America. Most importantly, making WHINSEC proud!"
She will attend the ASP3 program in 2022 at the School of Advanced Military Studies, Combined Arms Center, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
