A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Sept. 16 to commemorate the opening of the new Wiesbaden Elementary School.
Wiesbaden Elementary principal, Sue Morin, opened the ceremony with a warm welcome to all in attendance.
The new facility, located in the Hainerberg housing area, will serve preschool through fifth grade students. The student body is made up of children from families of service members and Department of Defense personnel that serve in the Wiesbaden area. It has a maximum capacity of 750 students and is over 112,000 square feet.
The state-of-the-art school is comprised of seven “neighborhoods” that include learning studios, hubs, group learning and one-to-one learning spaces. The areas include moveable walls that create flexible and adaptable spaces. The building itself helps support STEM and real-world relevant curricula.
Tom Brady, Director of DoDEA, said to the audience, “What a commitment from the United States and Germany, to their partners in freedom, and what a commitment from the DoD to provide over $58 million for this school!”
The completion of the new elementary school completes a trifecta of new construction in the Wiesbaden community. A new-construction high school opened in 2017 and new-construction middle school opened in 2018.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers led the construction projects and collaborated with German partners on all three schools. All three of the Wiesbaden schools in Hainerberg were constructed with sustainability and energy-saving concepts that were designed to preserve environmental resources and save taxpayer dollars.
Following the event, invited guests were given tours of the new school. Morin added, “The representation at today's ribbon-cutting ceremony speaks to the strong partnerships and teamwork invested in our school and community as a whole.”
