On Aug. 26, 2021, 11 U.S. Marines, one Sailor, and one Soldier were killed in a suicide bombing at the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan. They were husbands, wives, fathers, siblings, friends and colleagues to many. Deeply saddened by the events that took place, the Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point community came together to dedicate a memorial for the fallen. The memorial was placed outside the air station’s main gate as a reminder of the heroes’ honor, commitment and ultimate sacrifice while in the line of duty.
“We just wanted a place for those to go to pay respects or if you were directly impacted,” said U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Michael Childress, an aviation supply specialist with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 14.
“It felt like we needed a memorial here,” said Destiny Childress, the wife of Sgt. Childress. “It hurt me to realize that these people were no longer going to be here for their families and their friends. We want them to know that we care.”
Several Marines helped by setting up, donating and by maintaining the memorial. The memorial is open to all and will be in place temporarily.
