DAHLGREN, Va. – For Waterfront Configuration Manager Terry Clouse, who supports Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division Dam Neck Activity (NSWCDD DNA), years of CPR training prepared him to respond quickly to a life-and-death situation.
In the late evening hours of a summer night in August, Clouse hurriedly answered the frantic knocks at his front door. His neighbor’s wife stood at his doorstep seeking immediate help. Clouse quickly learned that his neighbor appeared unresponsive and not breathing. Upon arriving at the residence, Clouse found his neighbor in cardiac arrest. Trained and certified in CPR, AED and First Aid, Clouse knew exactly what to do and sprang into action.
Clouse began applying chest compressions and administering mouth-to-mouth to his unconscious neighbor immediately. He continued to perform lifesaving measures until the EMTs arrived on scene. Later, Clouse learned his neighbor underwent successful heart surgery and was in recovery.
“I worked to revive [my neighbor] for five minutes before the EMTs took over and got him breathing again,” said Clouse. “When you are in a highly stressful situation like that, you need to react quickly because every second counts.”
Because of his quick thinking and swift action, Clouse helped save his neighbor’s life. “I am grateful that I had the knowledge and training to know what to do to help my neighbor until the real heroes arrived,” he said.
Clouse attributes his ability to assess this emergency situation and determine the necessary course of action to the CPR Training and Certification Program instructional team at NSWCDD DNA. “I took the training many times throughout my career and maintained my certification. It is more than just a job requirement; it is an essential life skill,” he said. Clouse serves the AEGIS Fleet Support Branch and participates in the training program to maintain requirement compliance while aboard Navy ships.
As the CPR-certified instructor serving NSWCDD and NSWCDD DNA, Safety and Environmental Program Manager Glyndon ‘G.G.’ Murphy leads the training development and certification program for CPR, AED and first-aid procedures.
Murphy coordinates, trains and approves certification for essential military, government employees – like Clouse – and contract personnel across various levels who require the training.
The program is also available to all workforce employees who wish to participate and become certified. “The CPR technique saves lives and can be performed by any individual with proper training facing an emergency situation that calls for this action,” Murphy said.
Occurring monthly, or more frequently if specifically requested by leadership and personnel, CPR training development consists of classroom-style learning, as well as hands-on interactive instruction. In addition to CPR, participants learn how to operate emergency devices, such as AEDs, and apply various first-aid treatments while practicing on training mannequins.
Over the course of the one-day training session, participants gain key knowledge and vital experience which provides certification for two years.
According to Murphy, “knowing what to do and having the confidence, the training and the skill to take action highly benefits the entire workforce, especially those in the field, on an aircraft and aboard our ships.”
