National Hispanic Heritage Month is recognized every year from Sept. 15 – Oct. 15 to celebrate both the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture and achievements of the United States.

To celebrate the month, a ‘Sip and Cook’ was held at the Mustang Café at Osan Air Base, Republic of Korea, Sept. 25, 2021. During the event, participants were able to prepare and sample various versions of ceviche, a South American seafood dish which originated in Peru, where it is considered a national dish.

“The goal of this event was to share the diversities within the different Hispanic cultures, such as in South America, Mexico, Portugal and Spain,” said Master Sgt. Bernadett Kelley, 51st Maintenance Squadron unit deployment manager. “We wanted to showcase some of the different techniques each culture uses to make their own variation of ceviche, as well as how textures and flavors differ among Hispanic cultures.”

“I had so much fun at ‘Sip and Cook’,” said Carey Beaulieu, a participant of the event. “I came here wanting to learn how to make more culturally diverse recipes, and I really enjoyed learning how to make ceviche. It was also really nice to be able to meet new people with similar interests. My favorite dish was the Peruvian ceviche.”

In Peru, ceviche has been declared part of the country’s national heritage and even has a corresponding holiday in its honor. The classic Peruvian ceviche is made of chunks of raw fish, marinated in freshly squeezed lime, with sliced onions, chili peppers, salt and pepper.

“I really wanted to share some of our Hispanic culture with Osan,” said Kelley. “Growing up, I remember food being a source of laughter and happiness in my family. Now, as an adult, these types of dishes bring back those positive memories. Hispanic culture feels like having a family away from family. Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month through events like this are such a great way to embrace Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Panamanians and more. We all carry the same tradition of family and love, and my hope is we were able to show a little bit of that today.”

Anniversary dates of independence are a big deal among the Latin American community and take place throughout the month of September. September 15th is significant, because it is the anniversary date of independence for countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Additionally, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence on September 16th and 18th.

“This was a really cool opportunity to try dishes and desserts I wouldn’t normally eat,” said Beaulieu. “I would definitely like to come back to another event like this.”
