Soldiers and families were able to let loose and enjoy a free movie courtesy of the Army’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation Program at the Fort Lee Playhouse theater Sept. 24, 2021. This event gave soldiers and families the opportunity to take a break from the daily work schedule to relax, improve morale, and enjoy some time with each other.

Karin Watson, the Fort Lee garrison commander, works with MWR to help organize events with a focus on boosting morale, getting a break from the weekly routine, and getting soldiers out the barracks to enjoy themselves.

“Honestly it has been something that we have been trying to get the soldiers to do because we have the Lee Playhouse,” said Watson. “It was difficult because of COVID, and so we felt that we were at a point that we could get soldiers to come out and get that break from the day-to-day grind.”

Tanisha Love, the Fort Lee garrison command sergeant major, said that she has worked alongside MWR with a focus on people first to promote a fun environment.

“We are talking about focusing on our families and on our soldiers,” said Love. “Now when we talk about our soldier’s we know there are two different populations. We are talking about the permanent party, and we are talking about AIT and so we have this movie night to get them out of the barracks to be able to enjoy and just promote fun.”

Megan Green, an MWR marketing director works with different corporate sponsors who are funding events for soldiers and families.

“We go out and get corporate sponsors that come in and sponsor the movies and sponsor different MWR events that allow us to fund it,” said Green. “This allows us to give it to the soldiers for free.”

In addition to Army trainees, Air Force and Marine Trainees were welcome to join. This brought all three branches together for some additional fun to start the weekend, said Watson.

“I think what’s also really great is reaching out to all the units on the installation. I was really pleased how, in addition to our army trainees that are here, that I’ve seen our Air Force trainees and I’ve also seen our Marine trainees in the theater,” said Watson. “So that is really great, giving them an opportunity to get out the barracks especially on a Friday night and a long hard week of training to enjoy themselves.”
