DETROIT ARSENAL, Mich. – “Imagine if we didn’t have the richness of Hispanic culture in our lives. Think of the music we would never hear, the food we would never taste, the people we would never meet and the heroes we would have never heard of,” opined Col. Steven Carozza, the U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command chief of staff, during remarks made at an Oct. 4 Hispanic Heritage Month observance.
Carozza was one of the featured speakers at the Detroit Arsenal event that also featured a food presentation made by a members of the Garcia family. The Garcias moved to nearby Ecorse in 1973 to eventually open a restaurant featuring authentic Mexican cuisine, samples of which they offered to observance participants.
The Hispanic heritage story, Carozza stated, “illustrates why we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month and the rich mosaic of people and cultures that continue to work together to build and strengthen our Army and our Nation.
“Today, more than 16 percent of America’s Army is composed of Hispanic American Soldiers. Each year during Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the Soldiers, Army Civilians and family members who contributed – and continue to contribute – to our Army.”
Hispanic Heritage month is uniquely celebrated from Sept. 15 – Oct. 15 due to the many related, yearly celebrations that take place within the offset 30 day period.
