Name: Lothar Kunz
Job title: Privately Owned Vehicle Inspector
Assigned: Baumholder POV Inspection Station, Base Support Operations Maintenance, 405th Army Field Support Brigade
Location: Baumholder, Smith Barracks, Bldg. 8421
Experience: I’ve been working at the POV inspection station in Baumholder for three years. From 1986 to 1999, I worked at the Exchange auto parts store on Smith Barracks, and following this I worked at a local Chrysler and Jeep dealership for seven years and a local Ford dealership for 13 years. For the last 35 years I’ve been working in customer service in the automotive industry and still doing so today at the POV inspection station here.
Hometown: Ruschberg, Germany
Family: I have been married for 36 years to my wife, Jutta. We have a daughter and a son. Our daughter’s name is Luisa, and she’s 31. Our son’s name is Oliver, and he’s 26.
Q: Can you explain what you do and what you are responsible for at the Baumholder POV Inspection Station?
A: I’m responsible for providing quality customer service and support to people who bring their automobiles to the Baumholder POV inspection station to be inspected. For each customer, I conduct a full vehicle inspection on their automobile and provide them with an inspection sheet documenting my findings. If there are any deficiencies noted during the inspection, I explain them thoroughly to customer and I also physically show the deficiency or deficiencies to the customer to make it easier for them to understand. My goal is to always provide a positive atmosphere with each customer and to ensure every car that passes through the inspection station is safe to drive on the roads here in Germany.
Q: Why is the service the Baumholder POV Inspection Station provides to the community so important?
A: Our number one responsibility is to ensure all these vehicles are safe to be driven on the roads. We look over everything but the main things are tires, lights, suspension and brakes. We are not looking to find problems. We are just looking to make sure the cars are safe to drive on the roads.
Q: What do you enjoy about your job, and what motivates you?
A: For the last 35 years I’ve been doing customer service, and this is what I enjoy. I grew up right here close to Baumholder, and a lot of my neighbors are Americans. They are part of my community and my life. I enjoy supporting them and providing them with quality customer service.
