MAYPORT, Fla. (NNS) – The Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) held it’s change of command ceremony, October 14.

At the ceremony, Captain Judd Krier, of Bath, Pennsylvania, relieved Captain David Loo, of New York City, Iwo Jima’s commanding officer.

The ceremony celebrated Loo's outstanding leadership during his tour as Iwo Jima’s Commanding Officer. The ship most recently returned from a successful deployment in the 5th and 6th Fleet area of operations.

After being relieved of command, Loo shared with the crew his appreciation of their efforts during his time onboard Iwo Jima.

“Thank you all for making this an exceptional tour,” said Loo. “It has been both challenging and rewarding as we navigated together through such unprecedented conditions. You managed to perform at optimal levels through unique circumstances, from our emergence from the maintenance availability, training cycle, restriction of movement, to your support of the different fleet commanders during our eight-month deployment. Everyone played a part in our successful journey, and I am humbled to have had the opportunity to be the commanding officer of this great ship and her crew.”

Krier is the 15th commanding officer of Iwo Jima.
Prior to assuming command of Iwo Jima, Krier previously served as the ship’s executive officer.

Krier's shore tours include the United States Naval Academy as an Electrical Engineering Master Instructor. He has been assigned to the joint staff, where he served as a J5 Action Officer. He has also been assigned to OPNAV N133, where he served as the Surface Warfare Officer (Nuclear) Program Manager.

Krier’s first tour of duty was aboard the USS VICKSBURG (CG 69) where he served as Strike Officer. He served aboard the USS TRUMAN (CVN 75) as Reactor Controls Division Officer. Upon graduating Department Head School with distinction, he was assigned to USS PONCE (LPD 15) where he served as First Lieutenant, and then to USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65) where he served as the After Station Officer. While assigned to the USS ENTERPRISE, he completed Joint Professional Military Education Phase I training through the Air Command and Staff College. Additionally, aboard the USS PEARL HARBOR (LSD 52), as both Executive Officer and Commanding Officer.

Captain Stephen Froehlich, a native of Houston, Texas, will serve as Iwo Jima’s executive officer.

Iwo Jima is homeported at Naval Station Mayport, Florida conducting continuous maintenance availability.
