My name is Jacqueline Rosali Mena, born and raised in Puerto Rico. I joined the military, during my first year of college while attending the ROTC program at the University of Puerto Rico in May 1993. I was so intrigued and eager to learn more about the military that I decided to enlist. The main reason for my decision to join was mostly for the challenge.
The challenge was to overcome the fear of the unknown, to prove to myself that I could, and to rise above the language barrier that was keeping me from moving forward and succeeding.
I have learned that if you don’t take the chance or the opportunity to challenge yourself, you will never know what could have been. Always take those risks and learn from your mistakes, it only makes you a better leader in the end.
My best advice to any young soldier is to take advantage of every opportunity the service has to offer, always be respectful, learn and share the knowledge with others, and always try to be the best version of yourself.
Being Hispanic has played a huge role in defining who I am. Our Hispanic Heritage is full of culture, traditions, talents, food, and history. We are a part of the largest growing minority, adding a diversifying flavor to the U.S. Throughout our journey and hardships, being Hispanic means I am a part of a much greater and supportive community that empowers us to fulfill our dreams.
