SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Information Warfare Training Command San Diego (IWTCSD) celebrated the 246th Navy Birthday on October 13, 2021, led by the command’s eleven Chief Petty Officer (CPO) selectees.
The ceremony included a historical background of the U.S. Navy’s establishment, the heritage in honoring the Service's birthday, the reading of the Chief of Naval Operations birthday message, the ceremonial ringing of nine bells, the singing of “Anchors Aweigh,” and the traditional birthday cake cutting.
Cmdr. Tim Raymie, commanding officer, IWTCSD, commented, “This year’s theme of Resilient and Ready is quite fitting, not just because we have had to be resilient against the Coronavirus pandemic, but because these are everyday qualities that our Navy and nation display. Whether it was rebounding during great naval battles like Coral Sea, Midway or Leyte Gulf in World War II, responding after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, or supporting Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, and Freedom Sentinel, our Navy has remained ready to answer the nation’s call.”
This year, IWTCSD’s eleven CPO selectees were able to play a significant role in ceremony participation due to the overlapping timeframe with the CPO initiation season. With “a sense of heritage” being an important characteristic of the CPO, it was fitting to have the CPO selectees take the lead in the ceremony’s execution.
CPO selectee, Cryptologic Technician Collection First Class Mallory Macpherson stated, “All the CPO selectees were thrilled and honored for the opportunity to lead the 246th Navy Birthday ceremony during our CPO initiation season. Allowing the CPO selectees to take ownership of such an important occasion for our Navy was very meaningful.”
The cake cutting ceremony featured the commanding officer, as the most senior Sailor present, with Information Systems Technician Second Class Ricardo Trevino as the most junior. Following tradition, Raymie and Trevino cut the first piece of birthday cake together.
Trevino reflected, “I was grateful to be part of such an amazing ceremony for the Navy’s 246th birthday, but am more proud to be a part of this great IWTCSD family and community.”
Following the ceremony, all hands were provided a piece of birthday cake as part of the celebration. It was also a great opportunity for IWTCSD military and civilian staff members to socialize, reflect, and discuss the important role that the Navy has had on each individual’s career.
