WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio – A blood drive was held in the Properties at Wright Field housing office on Sept. 23.
The event attracted several donors, including 2nd Lt. Dylan Hazlett from the Air Force Institute of Technology.
“The reason I give blood is simply to help other service members,” he said.
Blood collected during drives is used for surgery, transfusions, to treat cancer patients and battlefield wounds.
“Not only does donating blood help military personnel and their families in peacetime and wartime, but it also helps civilians in need during humanitarian missions,” said Senior Airman Michael Brady, 88th Diagnostics and Therapeutics Squadron medical laboratory technician.
Military, civilians, retirees, contractors and family members can donate blood. All a donor needs to do is walk in, bring a photo ID, register, go over a few health questions, get a mini physical and then donate. The entire process takes about an hour.
While the base’s Blood Donor Center accepts all blood types, the greatest demand is for Type O donors, 88th Medical Group officials said. One pint of blood can help up to three people in need.
For more information about blood donations, contact the base’s Armed Services Blood Program at 937-257-0580.
