FORT CARSON, Colo. — More than 40 service members trained with and met Denver Broncos’ players, coaches and cheerleaders during the USAA and NFL training camp Aug. 25, 2021, at the Sports Dome in Centennial, and the University of Colorado Health Training Center Fieldhouse in Englewood.
“It’s important for the community to put out events like this because it really lets the Soldiers know that they are appreciated and also lets the community show appreciation,” said 2nd Lt. Isaiah Fleck, military police, 59th Military Police Company, 759th MP Battalion.
During the boot camp service members participated in the same events used to evaluate NFL talent including the 40-yard dash, three-cone shuttle, vertical jump, receiving gauntlet and quarterback arm challenge. Soldiers were divided into five-person teams and instructors kept score based on performance. The team with the most points became the champions of the boot camp and received five tickets for the Aug. 28 Broncos’ game against the Rams.
“There are a lot of competitions today, but we are going to put in some work,” said Spc. Conner White, military police, 59th MP Company.
Service members from 759th MP Bn., 4th Engineer Battalion, 1st Space Brigade, Air Force and the Navy participated in the training camp.
“I cheered for them, being their hype man to keep the team alive and doing their best,” said Spc. Joshua Skorczewski, mechanic, Forward Support Company, 4th Eng. Bn.
The Soldiers put in the effort and time competing to win the grand prize, but in the end the Air Force team won the competition. All the service members coordinated and communicated with each other to achieve success — working together as a team. Skorczewski summed up the way each service worked together using the phrase, “one team, one fight.”
Fleck shared the importance of teamwork and coordination as it related to the boot camp, but also in combat.
“Whether you’re on the road or in combat, you always have to be in constant communication, you have to be on the same page as teammates and as a team,” Fleck said.
Following the competition, service members were provided lunch, access to watch the Broncos’ practice and a meet-and-greet with some of the players, cheerleaders and Randy Gradishar, a retired Denver Broncos football linebacker, who earned seven NFL Pro Bowl selections during his career. The Soldiers had an opportunity for autographs and photographs during the meet-and-greet, as well.
“This is a once in a lifetime thing … in my army career,” Skorczewski said. “It shows that people are willing to put forth the effort and the time.”
