NAVAL SUPPORT ACTIVITY, BAHRAIN – Sgt. Maj. Rafael C. Vargas assumed the duties as the Naval Amphibious Forces, Task Force 51/5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade sergeant major from Sgt. Maj. Misitupa Tueichi during a Relief and Appointment Ceremony held at NSA Bahrain, Oct. 18, 2021.
The traditional ceremony included the passing of the noncommissioned officer sword, which signifies the transfer of the responsibilities and accountability from one senior enlisted Marine to another.
During the ceremony, Brig. Gen Farrell J. Sullivan, commanding general of Naval Amphibious Forces, Task Force 51/5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade, presented Tueichi the Legion of Merit, with a combat device, for 30 years of honorable service.
“You will truly be missed at 51/5. Throughout your time here, you have been a silent professional who set the standard for every Marine and Sailor,” said Sullivan. “As a Senior Enlisted Advisor, you have my upmost respect and I wish you and your family the best as you start a new chapter in your life.”
Tueichi thanked the Marines, Sailors, families, and friends during his final speech as sergeant major.
“Over the past 30 years, I’ve enjoyed serving my country as a United States Marine. I truly care for the Marines, Sailors, and families of Task Force 51/5 and know that you all will continue to do great things for our country in the region.”
Vargas, Task Force 51/5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade’s new sergeant major, gave a brief speech about coming to the unit.
“On the behalf of me and my family, I’m glad to be joining this unique command,” said Vargas. “Being part of a truly integrated Navy-Marine Corps team is an experience not many get to have and I look forward to serving the Marines and Sailors of this command.”
