Airmen from the 482nd Fighter Wing, Homestead Air Reserve Base, Florida, returned home from deployment in Southwest Asia on June 1.
The returning members arrived shortly after 8:30 a.m., and were greeted by Col. David Castaneda, 482nd Fighter Wing commander, along with other group and squadron leadership, wingmen and family members.
“I could not be more proud of the efforts and achievements the "Makos" have accomplished on these combat aviation deployments” said Castaneda.
The 93rd Fighter Squadron adopted the term and mascot "Florida Makos" when they were first established to represent the F-16 aircraft and fighting spirit. The "Makos" fly and maintain the F-16C Fighting Falcon aircraft and their F-16s can be identified by the letters "FM" ("Florida Makos") and the Mako shark displayed proudly on the tail.
These Airmen covered a wide range of specialties throughout multiple locations to help achieve mission success even through the pandemic.
“Our members have received accolades from the highest levels of Air Force and DoD leadership, despite any obstacles” Castaneda said.
The 482nd Fighter Wing, is a fully combat-ready unit capable of providing F-16C Fighting Falcon multi-purpose fighter aircraft, along with mission ready pilots and support personnel, for short-notice worldwide deployment. During the Atlantic hurricane season, the 482nd FW routinely supports forward deployment of the Air Force Reserve's "Hurricane Hunters" weather reconnaissance mission, and joint relief operations with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). In addition, the 482nd FW supports and trains civil engineering, communications, medical, logistics, aircraft maintenance, mission support, aerial transportation specialists and a security forces squadron that can be deployed interchangeably with active-duty units to meet U.S. Air Force commitments around the world.
