FORT KNOX, Ky. – Fort Knox Military police officers participated in their annual certification training at multiple locations across the installation Oct. 18-22.
Deputy Chief Gerry LaPlace said the training is designed to qualify officers each year in a number of different elements they encounter on duty to include legal aspects, first aid, and qualifications with weapons and driving.
He said they partner with a number of different agencies to ensure the training is effective.
“We include the legal office for the reviews of updated legal arguments,” said LaPlace. “We also include [Child Protective Services] from Hardin County, the Family Advocacy Program and the [Criminal Investigation Division] so that they can give us some updated responses on how to handle things like sexual assault and child abuse cases.”
LaPlace said the inclusion of CPS and FAP was new in this year’s training to better prepare the officers in dealing with domestic violence and child abuse cases. The agencies also educate officers about sensitivities regarding children and adults who have experienced sexual assault.
According to LaPlace, the classroom trainings were set up to equip them for what came later in the week.
“All of the classes given by the leaders culminated into Thursday’s training,” said LaPlace. “It included traffic stops, DUI stops, crime scenes; where the officers go through these scenarios and are then evaluated by the instructors as to whether they’re qualified or need more training.”
LaPlace explained retraining officers each year is vital to keeping Fort Knox officers at their best.
“Not only is it a requirement by the Department of the Army that police officers are certified annually, it also gives them updates as to what has changed in the laws,” said LaPlace. “It teaches them what has changed in how the Army effectively does community policing.”
While the end goal of the week’s training is to get all the officers re-certified, LaPlace said it’s also about putting that training into action.
“We try to project a very professional officer when we’re out in the field,” said LaPlace. “Communication is always the most important. If we can sit and talk with community members about what is the best way to handle something, then we’ll try and do that.”
