LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Virg.- Officials from Air Combat Command A6 held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 29 to celebrate the opening of a new operations center the ACC Cyber Defense Correlation Cell (ACC CDCC).
The ceremony was the fruition of a plan that was first proposed as the Weapons Assurance Service provider (WASP) by former A6 Director, Col. Jason Sutton.
“This new requirement aimed to fill a mission-critical gap as it was identified for cybersecurity and defense of the Air Force’s (Major) Weapons Systems platforms.” Said 1st Lt. Robert Webber, OIC of Cyber Readiness. “Prior to this new requirement, the security defend controls that the Air Force Information Network (or AFIN) from cyber intrusion and cyberattack did not extend to weapon systems and their associate mission systems.”
The CDCC is not unique to ACC, as it will be in seven other MAJCOMS and the U.S. Space Force. But its importance to the ACC mission is unique.
“CDCC brings unity of effort to the cyber security fight for weapon systems.” Said Tech Sgt Cody Bettac. NCO in charge, CDCC Operations. “With this organization in place, we can leverage both our resources and expertise towards the advancement of cybersecurity for weapon systems that was previously missing.” “The CDCC organization consists of seven core functions: MDT Systems Analysis, Incident Response, DCO-IDM Coordination (Defense Cyber Operations-Internal Defense Measures), Data/Information Sharing, Training, Awareness and CDCC System Maintenance.”
Webber said ACC’s CDCC is leading the way for the other CDCC’s to learn how to use their new space in the Air Force.
“Not only is the CDCC construct and capability necessary to defend the nation, ACC CDCC has paved the way with furthering cyber defense integration with the intelligence and operations communities with its SENTINEL REIGN exercise series,” said Webber. “Currently, ACC has hosted three iterations of SENTINEL REIGN as a means of proof-of-concept testing and validation.”
The Ceremony was headed by Brig. Gen. Chad Raduege, the current A6 director and chief information officer.
