ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. – Airmen assigned to the 28th Munitions Squadron competed in the 2021 Global Strike Challenge at Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota, August 16.
Global Strike Challenge is the world’s premier bomber, Intercontinental Ballistic Missile, helicopter operations and security forces competition with units from Air Force Global Strike Command, Air Combat Command, Air Force Reserve Command and the Air National Guard.
The objective of the competition is to see which base will be chosen as the best in all of Global Strike. The airmen competing are tested on technical proficiency, effort, uniforms and even down to the basic skills of being a munitions Airmen.
“This is what we do,” said Staff Sgt. Ryan McCloskey, 28th MUNS Global Strike team lead. “We get paid for a living to be good at this and we should be because if there were no munitions here, there would be no 28th Bomb Wing.”
Teams compete in events that require innovative thinking and teamwork, which are some of the core competencies of the AFGSC mission.
In addition to competing for recognition as the best in AFGSC, the challenge also gives 28th MUNS airmen a chance to showcase the world’s premier bomber and ICMB force.
“It’s really important to be good at our job just like anybody else is but it’s a little bit more special and near and dear [to our hearts] when people are relying on us,” said McCloskey. “It’s not just about killing the bad guy, it’s about saving people’s lives too.”
The Raiders of the 28th Bomb Wing continue to show that they can provide airpower anytime, anywhere.
