FORT Sill, Oklahoma (Oct. 3, 2021)- Fire Prevention Week kicked off Oct. 3 with a training block to increase awareness of safety precautions to take in case of a carbon monoxide emergency.
Battalion Chief Cory Garrard teamed up with the Fort Sill Fire Department to educate students from Freedom Elementary at two stations: Smoke House and Ladder Truck.
The Smoke House was used to teach the students “How to evacuate the facility or their house if it’s on fire,” Garrad said.
The students were taught to “start getting low, crawl to the door, see if the door knob is hot, if it’s not hot then they will exit out the door.”
The Ladder Truck is “the first company that would respond to Freedom Elementary.” The truck was brought to the school to teach students “on the truck itself and what their role is,” Garrad explained.
The theme for this year's Fire Prevention Week is “Learn the sounds of fire safety,”. The day started at 8:30 a.m. at Freedom Elementary and lasted until 3 p.m. The students were able to simulate what it is like to be in a real fire, and practice the skills they were taught. Training included how to react to a fire/carbon monoxide alarm.
“Teach them how to escape their room or their house and what to do after they escape,” said Garrad. They were also able to see the Ladder Truck up close and even go inside. Each class had a small block of time to learn from the firefighters as well as ask questions on fire safety.
Students also got a visit from Sparky, the mascot of Fire Prevention Week. Sparky strolled through the halls and greeted students as they walked by. Sparky was a fan favorite that got the students excited to learn about fire safety.
The purpose of Fire Prevention week is to teach students, teachers, and parents measures to limit injuries and deaths from fires. The firefighters of Fort Sill Fire Department worked hard to teach the students and staff of Freedom Elementary the importance of fire safety.
