YOKOSUKA, Japan – The Director of the United States Missile Defense Agency (MDA) Vice Adm. Jon A. Hill visited the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Barry (DDG 52) Oct. 21 as part of a pierside tour at Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka.
Vice Adm. Hill and senior MDA staff received a guided tour of the ship to gain a general understanding and capabilities of an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, and the role AEGIS destroyers play in Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) enterprise.
“These scientists and engineers are very smart people and are dedicated to protecting our Nation and its interests through missile defense. We are happy to showcase how their hard work, research, and development came to fruition in the form of our Baseline 9 DDG,” said Cmdr. Chris Gahl, commanding officer of USS Barry.
Highlighting Barry’s BMD capabilities, the tour included Barry’s Vertical Launch System (VLS) launcher, the SPY radar system, and a briefing inside the ship’s Combat Information Center (CIC) led by Barry’s Fire Control Officer (FCO).
“I was proud to showcase the capabilities and equipment of our ship to the MDA group,” said Lt. Brendan Metcalf, Barry’s FCO. “Barry serves as a critical asset in the overall Ballistic Missile Defense System with our ability to detect, track and engage potential threats to our nation and allies.”
Members of the tour included United States Army and Air Force personnel, as well as members of the Senior Executive Service (SES). "Today’s visit was a fantastic opportunity to present Barry’s role as a national asset in the BMD mission,” said Cmdr. Gahl. “Barry has a reputation of excellence and our missile defense capabilities are no exception. The crew’s dedication to tactical proficiency and combat readiness makes this Aegis destroyer a preserver of peace in one of the most important strategic regions on the globe.”
Barry is forward-deployed to the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific. As the U.S. Navy's largest forward-deployed fleet, 7th Fleet employs 50 to 70 ships and submarines across the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans. U.S. 7th Fleet routinely operates and interacts with 35 maritime nations while conducting missions to preserve and protect a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
