Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point’s Natural Resources Department (NRD) conducted a controlled burn at Marine Corps Outlying Landing Field (MCOLF) Oak Grove, Thursday, October 28, 2021.
MCOLF Oak Grove recently underwent a timber removal project that established clear zones and transition zones for aircraft to safely use the landing field for training or emergencies. This burn served to consume remaining debris that could become hazardous to aircraft landing near the timber harvest site. It encompassed nearly 89 acres.
Additionally, the MCAS Cherry Point NRD and fire department utilized this burn as an opportunity to stay current on training qualifications.
The scheduled burn was in cooperation with MCAS Cherry Point Fire Department, the Range Management Department and the North Carolina Forestry Service.
MCAS Cherry Point and its satellite facilities, such as MCOLF Oak Grove and Marine Corps Auxiliary Landing Field Bogue, are utilized by military branches across the Department of Defense, allied and partnered nations, and local civil organizations.
