This is the first in a series of articles about the different programs offered at the Fort Knox AWC. Beginning with the Bod Pod, AWC’s most popular attraction which performs a total body composition assessment, and then you speak with a health professional about the results.
In order to prepare for your assessment you must fast for three hours, excluding water, and not exercise for 14 hours prior to the appointment. The Bod Pod also requires you wear a tight single layer of spandex/compression clothing. Before your appointment the Fort Knox AWC staff will send you a self-assessment of your current status.
The self-assessment tool helps the health educators establish your current fitness and nutrition baseline, and ability to safely complete the different testing resources offered by the AWC. It’s also a great tool to start tracking change over time, a major proponent of the AWC programs.
Once you’ve met these prerequisites you can begin the process for the Bod Pod. First you will be weighed, have your height measured and your blood pressure taken. After that has been entered into the system you can begin your assessment. The body composition measurements are taken in two 45 second increments inside the Bod Pod.
When you are inside the machine, it sounds almost like a loud panting dog. However, you are in and out of the machine in less than two minutes.
Afterwards you will speak with a health educator about your goals. Do you want to lose weight? Are you looking to gain muscle? Do you have a specific fitness goals? These measurable goals are a guide you to your next step.
Often the AWC health educators will set the next appointment to attend “Upping your Metabolism,” a one hour course held Tuesday and Thursday with basic nutrition information. This course is a pre-requisite to the next most commonly requested resource at the AWC, the metabolic test.
Please join us next time for what to expect during the metabolism course and test!
